While some in the local populations collaborated with the fascists many others still remained defiant toward the foreign forces whose rule had become more cruel as the war progressed. This testimony recounts the experience of Arabs living in prison camps and being tortured by the Germans. Abdullah Hassine had been killed after being beaten severely by his prison guards, and Hamani who was imprisoned for allegedly having said “La France est finie.”
