Gharian Jews lived for hundreds of years in underground caverns in three communities about 100 kilometers south of the city of Tripoli. In the caves, these Jews tried to defend themselves against their hostile neighbors. During the Second World War, Jews from Gharyan sheltered Jews who had fled from other towns and villages in Libya.
