Drawing by soldier Jack “Dan” Daniel, from within a file of Gunner H. Henry Kassman’s correspondence between 1941-1943 compiled by his daughter in 2010. File’s contents are primarily typed letters and other correspondence, occasionally reproduced (often in addition to the typed version), and also include photographs, diary entries from Kenneth Rankin’s book Top-Hats in Tobruk, some other written materials, and some explanatory material. Page 12: drawing by Jack “Dan” Daniel, captioned “In the paddock, Tobruk, 1941”. Two shirtless soldiers, seated, watch a more fully uniformed man (drawn to resemble a horse in posture, and looking quite proud) sprint by. Dialogue from one soldier to the other: “There you are, mate – that’s a Thoroughbred – you can tell ’em by their bunkers and [hooks/hocks].”
1/2 page, reproduced pen or dark pencil drawing. Dated 1941.
N.B. While this post is dated to August 14, 1941, this is only an approximate date according to the drawing’s position in the file (between August 12th and August 16th). This has been done purely because the system at the time of posting does not allow the entry of only a year. The actual date is 1941.
