Page 3: Letter to Kassman’s mother. Letter is addressed to her with a name which is now outdated thanks to her recent remarriage; Kassman does not yet know her new name. He and Alec have received more mail (two cards and a letter).
Last night, they had a celebration « as a joint birthday & wedding party. Your health was drunk in here (one can among four of us) and toasted in toast, porridge, tunny and peas, and coffee. » Kassman says he felt full for the first time in six months.
Very little news where he is. Mentions heat, food quality, and writes a full paragraph about the Middle East flies and how they differ in behavior from English flies despite identical appearance. Also mentions they are swimming almost every day and it is their only exercise. Closes with post scripts requesting his mother’s new name and saying he has just eaten green figs and very green grapes, and how many of each.
Censor HE Collins.
