Description
Handwritten letter dated June 30, 1936 – Mr F. SICARD, President of the Parents’ Association of the Secondary schools of Constantine, vigorously protests following « regrettable incidents » around the High school, students having been « stoned by young people fanatics ». He asks the Prefect to intervene with « the Jewish personalities » to « use their indisputable influence on their co-religionists to prevent the repetition of such exploits ». He warns of possible violent reactions from parents of students in the event of serious injuries.
Letter by the Central Superintendant dated June 30, 1936 – He reports an altercation, and « exchange of punches » between an Israelite and a Frenchman, the former claiming to have been treated as a dirty Jew. An Israelite witness confirmed this version. The Superintendant then specifies that three French witnesses spontaneously presented themselves to the police station to affirm that the French had been attacked « for no reason », and conclude that an investigation is opened.
Letter by the President of the Israelite Consistory dated June 30, 1936 – He drews the Prefect’s attention to « the regrettable incidents which have taken place in our City since last Saturday afternoon ». He claims to deplore that « groups of French people can stand up against each other » and says he is confident of the Prefect’s impartiality to help « restore peace and harmony in our city ».
