Rapport concernant l’attitude du maire d’Oran, 24 juin 1938
Description
This report from the prefect of Oran deals with the attitude of the mayor of Oran who, for the needs of his personal policy, engaged in violent anti-Semitic propaganda developed during the meetings given by the “Latin Friends”, despite the warnings about the dangers of such an action from the same prefect. He is worried about the development of this propaganda within the Muslim population. Indeed, many reports relate many incidents of propaganda carried out by Mr. Lambert through the “Friendships” within the Muslim population, including the recent creation of a Muslim section of the Latin Unions. The Israelite population is deeply moved by the breakthrough of this anti-Semitism in Arab circles. It is these fears that are exposed by the president of the Oran section of the LICA (International League against Antisemitism), Mr. Ghighi general counsel, and other personalities.
The prefect considers that the action of the mayor of Oran could be criminal and asks to summon him for an interview in the office of the Governor-General of Algeria, in order to make him “just remonstrances”.
