Description

Drawing by soldier Jack “Dan” Daniel, from within a file of Gunner H. Henry Kassman’s correspondence between 1941-1943 compiled by his daughter in 2010. File’s contents are primarily typed letters and other correspondence, occasionally reproduced (often in addition to the typed version), and also include photographs, diary entries from Kenneth Rankin’s book Top-Hats in Tobruk, some other written materials, and some explanatory material. Page 10: drawing of Tobruk fighting by Jack “Dan” Daniel. Captioned “Tobruk, August 12, 1941”. Shows two soldiers wielding guns in a structure (made of bricks?) with a shovel and other camp detritus visible on the ground before it (bottles, boxes, one labeled MRC or MRO). One of the guns has a strap; the other seems to be mounted, and has bullet casings falling away from it. In the air are fighter planes and circular scribbles that might represent bombs or smoke. The soldier with the gun with a strap has his mouth open.
