Drawing by soldier Jack “Dan” Daniel, from within a file of Gunner H. Henry Kassman’s correspondence between 1941-1943 compiled by his daughter in 2010. File’s contents are primarily typed letters and other correspondence, occasionally reproduced (often in addition to the typed version), and also include photographs, diary entries from Kenneth Rankin’s book Top-Hats in Tobruk, some other written materials, and some explanatory material. Page 4: Drawing – a self-portrait of Jack Daniel (‘Dan’), labelled “Portrait (self) of a fighting man – Tobruk, N. Africa 1941”. Drawing in pen or possibly dark pencil of a man in Afrika Korps shirt, shorts, and Italian galoshes, and a hat labelled “Aussie S[?] found in a latrine”. Also holding and wearing various gear (one is a mug; the others might be labelled “eating tins”?) and smoking a pipe. Drawing is labelled; some labels are more difficult to read. In the background is the sun, hilly ground, and a small fortification with a sign reading “chez moi”. Also small blotches which may be intended to be fleas or something else.

N.B. to avoid confusion: The only date given is 1941. As there is no option to enter only the year in the current uploading system, I have dated it to July 1st, 1941, as in the file it is located between a letter from June 30th and diary excerpts from July 3rd. However, it could easily be from another point in 1941, so please do not consider July 1st to be the actual date.
