Private Papers of H H Kassman – Airgraph from Kassman to Mother, March 6, 1943
Description
Page 10: Airgraph to mother. Mail, outfitting. Mentioned letter from Alec (brother). Germans “have been jammed into Tunisia (they are dead but they won’t lie down)”, which resulted in rumors that the soldiers will soon return to England. “I first heard this rumour within a month of arriving in Egypt, and have heard it periodically ever since. Personally I do not believe we shall reach home before the end of the War, nor in fact do I really want to do so.” Kassman says he finds army life much more pleasant and interesting in the Middle East[ern] Forces than it is for the home forces, and thinks many unmarried men in his position feel similarly. He adds that leave at home is probably “very dull” since most of one’s friends would be fighting abroad, and the food where he is is probably better than it would be back in England as well.
