Compte-rendu journalier sur les impressions générales et les réactions de la population musulmane et des milieux juifs sur le Statut des Juifs, Constantine, 22 octobre 1940
Description
This report describes the general impressions and reactions of the Muslim population on the Status of the Jews:
1/ The Muslims are satisfied with the Status of the Jews: they will no longer be governed or commanded “by Jews”, the Jews will no longer be part of a police force. They are surprised that some Jews can remain French thanks to a decoration. Some suggest checking under what conditions this decoration was obtained and withdrawing it if there is no formal proof of the acts for which it was awarded. Muslims complain that they do not have the same advantages as Jews, even though they also enjoy the same advantages.
2/ Jews are not very talkative. They want England to win and French public opinion to turn around. The intellectuals feel a certain resentment.
