Renseignement au sujet de l’attitude des Espagnols, Oran, 4 juillet 1940
Description
This report reports several pieces of information:
1. Certain Spaniards in connection with the Spanish Consulate in Oran, would propagate the Spanish claims in North Africa and would try to sound out the native opinion about these claims.
2. The Spanish Republicans would fear for their personal safety and would fear being handed over to the Franco government; they would consider leaving Algeria.
3. It has also been reported that in Spanish Morocco, the authorities are proceeding with voluntary enlistments among the natives. The recruits would be registered on lists and invited to stay at home, at the disposal of the authorities. They would not have received arms and would receive a daily allowance of six francs. According to the informant, these measures would aim to keep people at home and prevent their exodus to the French zone of Morocco or to Algeria.
