Renseignements au sujet d’un article paru dans le journal “Pariser Zeitung”, Oran, 20 octobre 1942
Description
The newspaper “Pariser Zeitung” in its number 1- of September 27, 1942, published an article: “The two Moroccan worlds, impressions of a journey”. According to the author of the article, Morocco is divided between Moorish Morocco (Moors) and French Morocco (Europeans). The Moors were still immersed in the Middle Ages, isolated from the civilization newly introduced into the country by the latter, the European settlers. In most of the French colonies, in Morocco, we do not encourage the natives in the path of Europeanization, we even try to turn them away. As long as they observe the religion, the jurisprudence and the administration of Islam, the native caïds do not need to know the French language and the French law. Some see this article as a disguised criticism of the policies of the Protectorate, which, by excessively respecting Islamic traditions, did not allow Morocco to interpenetrate and inter-understand between the natives and the settlers.
