Description

On June 1, 1942, the Prefect of Constantine spoke to the Superintendant of Guelma (pp. 283-284) and asked him to investigate the so-called EL KRAÏM Arnaud (Armand) to find out “if he is a Jew in the eyes of the law of June 2, 1941”, and “in the affirmative, invite him to subscribe urgently to his declaration of census…”. On June 10, the Superintendant replied : “the person concerned, who was a lieutenant in the army, was killed on the front at Angeville (Oise) on June 16, 1940″. However, he adds : “He left a widow with a child. He was born in Algeria, grandson of a Jew, a Moroccan subject”.

On October 26, 1942, the Governor General of Algeria transmits to the Prefect of Constantine a note (pp. 294-295) with a list of “Holders of accounts at the Caisse d’Épargne or at Chèques Postaux appearing to be of Jewish race and who have not subscribed to a census declaration”. Among the nine people cited is the name of EL KRAÏM Armand killed on the front in 1940.
