Description

March 13-29, 1941 – Letters concerning the census of foreigners arriving since June 1, 1940 in Morocco, from the Director of Public Security Services to the Head of the Diplomatic Cabinet of the General Residence on the one hand, from General Noguès – Resident General – to the Minister of Foreign Affairs on the other hand. In response to the Minister’s request dated March 13, 1941 to provide a « statement of foreigners entering and leaving Morocco since June 1, 1940 », a table giving by nationality the number of foreigners checked from June 1, 1940 to February 28, 1941 at the port of Casablanca and at the posts of Oujda and Arbaoua is communicated. It is specified that the addition of « detailed indications » concerning these people « would give rise to a very long and very important work which would have to be carried out not only by the police […] but also by the gendarmerie and the Bureau des Affaires Indigènes … ».

From the table it emerges that the most important nationality are the Spaniards (3544 entries for 2613 departures), followed by the Poles, the Portuguese, the English, the Italians and the Czechoslovaks (a few hundred each). There are 56 nationalities, with a total of 7688 entries for 6801 exits.

March 31, 1941 – The Head of the Diplomatic Cabinet at the General Residence writes to the Director of Public Security Services that the Minister of Foreign Affairs requests a detailed census.
