Rapport mensuel sur l’activité musulmane dans le Département de Constantine, juin 1948
Description
This report provides a general overview of June 1948 on political activity in Constantine and on the many external events which interest Muslim circles.
The Palestinian question is the subject of many comments. The press and the radio are followed passionately by Muslim circles. Tunisian Arabic-language newspapers and maps printed in Tunis on operations carried out by Arab troops are appreciated and sought after.
Keen anxiety manifested itself among the Jewish populations following the riots in Oudjda, Djerada, and Tripoli.
The boycott of Jewish commerce, cinemas, cafes, hairdressers, pharmacies, etc., continues. Some Israelite doctors see their Muslim clientele considerably reduced. It is also rumored that Jewish merchants sell poisoned products, such as candy, snuff …
The departures of Muslim volunteers to Palestine continued. Some would be in training, others would already be incorporated into Arab troops, combatants in Palestine. Since the riots in Tripoli, the British authorities have prohibited access to Tripolitania and 1,500 volunteers have since been turned back to southern Tunisia. The Egyptian government has prohibited the entry of volunteers into its territory.
A committee of aid to Palestine is created. Several contacts were made between the Oulama, the PPA, the UDMA, Sheikh El Okbi, Ferhat Abbas, and Messali. An agreement was founded to create a “Committee for the Defense of Free Palestine”.
The Palestinian issue is particularly important to the attention of the Ulama press organ. It allows him to attack the Western powers and in particular France which gave its agreement to the partition of Palestine. She also criticizes the pro-Semitic attitude of America and Russia, accusing the latter of wanting to make Palestine a new field of action for the continuation of its Cold War against the United States.
The report describes the various events in Palestine.
