Rapport mensuel – Constantine, août 1947
Description
This report gives an overview of August 1947 on political activity in Constantine and on the many external events of interest to Muslim circles.
The report describes the events in Palestine. These events are of great interest to the Jews of Constantine who criticize the attitude of the British government. Young Israelites take a keen interest in the Zionist movement. Three Zionist newspapers use propaganda, “The Appeal”, “The Voice of Israel”, “The Jerusalem Gazette”.
The consistent elections have taken place. Two lists were present, the list of “Union and Concorde” which brings together Traditionalist Jews, and the list of “Action and Renovation”, composed of younger elements, with a Zionist tendency. It was this second list that was elected. Mr. Drai Emile replaces Mr. Bakouche.
Events in Palestine are the subject of passionate commentary from Muslims in Constantine. They are informed of the fights and the attacks which take place in Palestine, in particular because of the Haganah. Muslims disapprove of the attitude of the Zionists. They may be tempted “to retaliate against the Israelite population […] and lead to a new program.”
