Rapport mensuel sur l’activité indigène dans le Département d’Alger, avril 1940
Description
This report provides an overview of April 1940 on the political activity of elected Muslim officials, reformist ulama, the Algerian People’s Party, etc. We can also read the information on the youth of the Algerian Muslim Congress, the action of the European parties on the Natives, the native workers, the economic question, etc.
A native was injured on the Souk El Raad des Lardjem while he was protesting “against the collector of market rights, a Jew”, the gendarmes then had to intervene and use their weapons. “The injured native, veteran, military medalist, named Boukamel died in hospital.”
“A deep hostility remains, among the rural Arabs as among the townspeople towards the Israelites, whom they reproach for having taken an excessive place in the economic and administrative life of Algeria”. “Any administrative formality in which the Arabs must submit to the control of Jewish agents, of any service (Contributions, Fraud, Office of Wheat, Police, Army even) is painful to them, and they must recognize that those – they don’t always know how to perform their duties with all the dexterity desirable. ” Reflections collected everywhere (notably in Algiers, Blida, Médéa, Ténès …) show that this state of mind is general among Muslims. It is also widely used by German propaganda.”
