Rapport mensuel sur l’activité indigène dans le Département d’Alger, avril 1942
Description
This report provides an overview of April 1942 on the political activity of elected Muslim officials, reformist ulama, the Algerian People’s Party, etc. We can also read the information on the youth of the Algerian Muslim Congress, the action of the European parties on the Natives, the native workers, the economic question, etc.
The report describes the administration of Jewish property. The Governor-General can appoint a provisional administrator to any Jewish business or property. Until now, only commercial or industrial companies had been the subject of this type of measure.
The numerus clausus concerning physicians has entered into force. 83 Jewish doctors will be eliminated from the medical profession in the department, 37 remain in office. Out of 25 midwives, only 4, wards of the Nation, can continue to practice. The expulsion of the doctors was followed by various comments. If some are satisfied with these measures, others, like Doctor Bendjelloul, are surprised by this decision in the midst of an epidemic, and when there is already a shortage of doctors in Algeria.
A few windows of Jewish stores were smashed in Algiers.
