Rapport mensuel sur l’activité indigène dans le Département d’Alger, septembre 1940
Description
This report provides an overview of September 1940 on the political activity of elected Muslim officials, reformist ulama, the Algerian People’s Party, etc. We can also read the information on the youth of the Algerian Muslim Congress, the action of the European parties on the Natives, the native workers, the economic question, etc.
The manifestations of hostility against the Jews are increasing, especially among Europeans. Leaflets are distributed daily, especially in Algiers by the militants of the PPF. On the night of September 11 to 12, a dozen Jewish store windows were smashed in the center of Algiers.
There are a few “minor” incidents between Jews and Muslims. The Muslim mass sees in the Jewish wholesalers those responsible for the rise in the price of living. Some Jewish leaders, anxious to deflect this hostility, try to return to favor with Muslim leaders by gestures of generosity. Other Jews try to get closer to the indigenous masses by outbidding their demands, even by flattering their eventual aspirations for independence. Finally, others, perhaps more numerous, try to get closer to certain Gaullist colonists, by adopting with them the order: “The future of Algeria is with England”.
“At the end of the month, there was a rumor that some Jews had thought […] of forming self-defense groups.”
“Mr. Bernard Lecache, director of LICA, who was staying in Algiers, having broken his promise to abstain from any political activity (article addressed to the weekly” Marianne “) is sent to a forced residence in Téni et-el -Haâd. “
